Drunk Driver Crashes Into SXSW Crowd, Killing Two

A suspected drunk driver killed a man and woman and injured dozens more after crashing through barricades while fleeing police at the South By Southwest festival in Austin early Thursday.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said 23 others were injured, five critically, as the driver tried to evade a pursuing police officer around 12:30 a.m. The two people that died were on a moped that was hit by the driver. The man also hit pedestrians in front of Mohawk night club where a performance of rapper Tyler The Creator was scheduled for the House of Vans showcase.

Mohawk cancelled Thursday night’s show and issued a statement on the incident via Twitter.

No details on the rest of Mohawk’s SXSW events that include weekend shows with Waka Flocka Flame and Trinidad James.

Acevedo did not identify the driver or the victims and asked witnesses and those who may have taken video to contact police rather than post it to the Internet. All the injured were taken to area hospitals.

The man, whose name was not released, faces two counts of capital murder and 23 counts of aggravated assault with a vehicle.
